tunrbull muzzleloader cow tag nov 19-dec 2
« on: June 10, 2016, 01:42:10 PM »
My son(13) drew this tag and the Yakima central youth muzzy cow tag starting October 1st. I am pretty familiar with Turnbull as it is not too far from us but have never hunted it. Anyone who has has had the Turnbull tag I would appreciate them letting us know how it went? what you thought of the hunt? Just trying to figure out where to concentrate our efforts Yakima or Turnbull? I am leaning towards Turnbull since I am more familiar with it and the dates are better for our schedule. This would be his first elk and first muzzleloader kill. (hopefully!)

Congrats, I drew this tag last year.  You'll receive information in the mail regarding what specific area your allowed to hunt within the refuge.  I put on 20+ easy miles of walking in 3 days last year and never cut another boot track in the snow.  It's a fun hunt; I recommend investing in a game cart if you don't already have one; the maintenance roads sure make it easy to get game out.  No motor vehicles allowed, of course.

Yes.  Your allowed to scout the day before the season which I skipped, seamed like a great way to put unnecessary pressure on the elk herd.  To be honest I had a great hunt, it was a ton of fun to experience flat elk country in comparison to the hell holes I'm use to

I shot a cow in there 2 years ago. Pretty neat hunt really. Larger area than I thought once I got in there. As you get closer and find what section you are placed in, I'd be glad to help with some info. I know it says different sections are designated for different weapons, but the reserve manager can change it, so you have to roll with it, but if you figure out the pattern, should be fun. Enjoy

Let me know if you end up getting the larger area at the south west corner, south of the Turnbull Slough.  My father in law/partner in crime had the tag 2 years ago, we were in elk every day in there, and we helped another forum member close the deal last year based on the same info.  I can send you a map of the hot spots.  Really great hunt, you and your son will enjoy it!

This is 100% spot on.  It is flat terrain with plenty of trails, you can walk them to get they lay and then cut across to cover all the ground.

Essentially, they are there or they aren't.  When they are there you should get a shot at muzzie ranges as there aren't too many places where you would see them at a long distance.

Good luck Idaho Guy! I've drawn the Turnbull archery tag. It's going to be great hunting elk in flat country! Like what I've read here the south portion sounds like the area to have...

Buy copper bullets. If you use lead you are required to pack the guts out.
